Video shows computer generated graphic of flat-topped Bear Seamount with Physalia Seamount in the background which are located off the coast of Massachusetts. The computer graphic is animated and turns so you can see the seamount from all directions.
Voice: Seamounts are mountains in the sea. Often the tops of these huge mountains are thousands of feet down below the surface. They are what's left of underwater volcanoes that are no longer active. New kinds of animals are being discovered every time scientists explore a seamount. Many of the animals we see growing on seamounts are deep sea corals. They are really beautiful and sometimes people collect them for jewelry, but this can really damage the environment as these corals grow very slowly. Check out some of the amazing rock types found on a seamount.
