The cruise team spent six days characterizing volcanic deposits and associated phenomena, providing fundamental new insights on eruptive phenomena, including the first observations of molten lava actively erupting in the deep ocean at West Mata volcano. Sea-floor images were obtained by cameras mounted on the Jason remotely operated vehicle (ROV). The scientific party and Jason team were onboard the University of Washington research vessel Thomas G. Thompson. Images courtesy of NSF and NOAA. Click on the left and right arrow to scroll through the pictures one by one, or select the play button for an automatic slideshow.
