The two long hooked reefs off Northwest Point caught both the US Brig Chippewa (1816) and the US Schooner Onkahye (1848). This area is well known as a ship ‘trap’ and has claimed dozens of ships over the centuries. By the time navigators realized they had made a mistake, the prevailing easterly wind and waves made it nearly impossible to escape. Image courtesy of Google Earth.
