This is a 30-m tower on the east side of the Lost City hydrothermal field. This sped-up video was taken from the submersible Alvin, in 2003. As we go up the chimney we see brownish- and white-colored areas. The whitest portions are the most actively venting areas of the chimney. At the top is a 1-m-tall marker used to identify the same location each time. Video courtesy of University of Washington.
