Toward the end of DSV Alvin dive #4037, we ran into a few swarms of crabs scavenging on some dead fish. We were all pretty excited to see probably 30 crabs in three clusters, eating away.

These are the largest white galatheid crabs we’ve seen during this expedition.

At this point, our pilot Bruce Strickrott joked with us that if we fell out, we’d end up looking like these fish!

Bruce impressed us with his crab-wrangling abilities, but I thought his game was over when I saw the biobox was still closed. But Bruce had one more card up his sleeve, and used Alvin’s two arms in tandem to deftly secure our last sample.
