A picture of authigenic carbonate ridges sticking up from the mud near an underwater valley known as Green Canyon, 1450 feet below the surface. Notice the tube worms in the lower left and upper center parts of the photo, and in the inset image. These animals live by using food produced by bacteria in their tissues. The bacteria make the worms’ food using substances dissolved in ground water seeping out around the ridges, rather than sunlight.
