The filament of cold, nutrient-rich water at this site extends offshore to bathe the Gulf of the Farallones and Cordell Banks Sanctuaries. Further south, smaller upwelling centers straddle Monterey Bay, creating substantial variation in upwelling and ocean circulation within the hundreds of miles of coastline of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary. |
