This 3D fly-through movie shows the seafloor at Explorer Ridge as mapped by the EM300 sonar system on board the R/V Thompson. Cool colors are deepest (3400 m), and warm colors are shallowest (1600 m). The EM300 was used to map an area of 100 km by 50 km at a resolution of 35 m. The location of the Magic Mountain Hydrothermal vent site, where the more detailed surveys were made, is shown. (Movie courtesy of Clay Hamilton and Bill Chadwick.)
