Arctic sea ice cover

The ice cover of the Arctic Seas consists of individual ice floes separated by areas of open waters (leads or polynyas). Floe sizes range from several m to km. In summer, light blue, freshwater melt puddles may cover up to 60% of the surface of the ice. (Photo courtesy of Rolf Gradinger).
