On December 26, 2004, a magnitude 9 + earthquake--the largest to occur on Earth in 40 years--shook the seafloor near the island of Sumatra. The quake spawned a tsunami that spread death and destruction across coastal areas from Indonesia to Africa. As of early 2005, more than 250,000 people have been confirmed dead, 15,000 are still missing, and more than 2 million have been displaced.
