The NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) invites educators to participate in a webinar about the Submarine Ring of Fire 2014 Expedition taking place November 29 - December 21, 2014.  This webinar will introduce educational resources developed for this ocean exploration mission to the northwest Eifuku Seamount in the northern Mariana Arc and NW Rota, an active submarine volcano north of Guam in the western Pacific Ocean.

First visited during the OER Submarine Ring of Fire Expeditions in 2004 and 2006, NW Eifuku Seamount and NW Rota are now part of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument. NW Eifuku is unique because it vents liquid carbon dioxide and it hosts a surprisingly dense biomass of chemosynthetic organisms. This combination makes it an extraordinary natural laboratory to study the effects of natural ocean acidification on marine ecosystems. NW Rota is one of only two sites in the world where active volcanic activity has been witnessed underwater. Here scientists will be exploring changes at this site since a major eruption in 2009.

This 60-minute webinar will provide an introduction to the expedition and the associated Education Expedition Module, including lessons and other resources to enable you and your students to delve more deeply into the expedition online. Resources presented will be archived for use during the upcoming academic year.
