The NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) invites educators and other interested parties to a webinar to introduce educational resources developed for the upcoming Hohonu Moana Expedition in and around the Hawaiian Island Marine National Monuments and National Marine Sanctuaries. This expedition will include the first view of regions deeper than 2,000 meters in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument and the first look at habitats deeper than 366 meters in Johnston Atoll – part of the recently expanded Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. Deep-sea coral and sponge communities, manganese crust communities, seamounts, and the geologic history of the region are major areas of focus for the expedition, which marks the first part of a three-year exploration effort called the Campaign to Address Pacific monument Science, Technology, and Ocean NEeds (CAPSTONE).

The expedition will include bathymetric mapping using multibeam sonar, water column profiling, and exploration using the NOAA remotely operated vehicle, Deep Discoverer. Using telepresence technology, scientists on board NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer will collaborate with scientists participating remotely from shore as they investigate biological habitats and geologic history of the deep ocean surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. Educators, students, and the general public can follow along and watch this expedition unfold in real-time via the Internet.

This 60-minute webinar will provide an introduction to the Hohonu Moana expedition and the associated education products, including standards-based lessons and other resources to enable educators and their students to delve more deeply into the expedition online.
