NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research invites formal and informal educators to participate in a webinar to introduce educational resources developed for an ocean exploration mission to the Northeast U.S. Canyons aboard the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer.

From July 8 – August 17, 2013, the Okeanos Explorer will explore the diversity of benthic habitats and features, including deep-sea corals, gas seeps and landslide features in and along the northeast deepwater canyons and seamounts off the U.S. East Coast.

Using telepresence technology, scientists on board the ship will collaborate with scientists participating remotely from shore. The expedition will use the ship’s core capabilities: a new remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that can reach a depth of 6,000 meters, multibeam sonar for bathymetric mapping, and a Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) profiler to characterize unknown and poorly-known areas of our ocean. Educators, students, and the general public can follow along and watch this expedition unfold in real time via the Internet.

This 60-minute webinar will provide an introduction to the science behind the expedition and the associated Education Expedition Module, including lesson plans and other resources to enable you and your students to delve more deeply into the expedition and follow along with it in real-time. Resources presented will be archived for use during the upcoming academic year.
