NOAA Ocean Exploration Webinar for Educators – Océano Profundo 2015: Exploring Puerto Rico’s Seamounts, Trenches, and Troughs

The NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) invites formal and informal educators to participate in a webinar to introduce educational resources developed for an ocean exploration mission to explore seamounts and troughs around Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Trench.

During Leg 3 of this expedition, April 9 – April 30, the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer will be exploring the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone surrounding Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Puerto Rico Trench. This expedition will include multiple remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives and the deepest dive ever for NOAA’s ROV, Deep Discoverer, at 6,000 meters. This expedition will likely include exploration of deepwater canyons, seamounts, fish habitats, and possibly a mud volcano.

Using telepresence technology, scientists on board the ship will collaborate with scientists participating remotely from shore. In addition to the ROV, the expedition is using multibeam sonar for bathymetric mapping, and a Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) profiler to characterize unknown and poorly known areas of our ocean. Educators, students, and the general public can follow along and watch this expedition unfold in real-time via the Internet.

This 60-minute webinar will provide an introduction to the expedition and the associated education products, including standards-based lessons and other resources to enable you and your students to delve more deeply into the expedition online. Resources presented will be archived for use during the upcoming academic year.
